NATO summit: Joe Biden to confront rising threats of Russia,China

Washington:Reaffirming the U.S. support of the 72-year-old alliance with NATO, US President Joe Biden held  first NATO summit as a commander in chief in Brussels, on Monday.

This marked a major shift from his predecessor Donald Trump's criticism of the organisation.

"NATO is critically important for U.S. interests in and of itself," Biden said from NATO's headquarters in Brussels while speaking with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, as reported by nbc news.

Biden also referred to NATO's Article 5 as "a sacred obligation,"which apparently states that an agreement that is an attack on one is an attack on all and will be met with a collective response.

Remembering the days after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks he said that's NATO stepped up and honoured Article 5." I just want all of Europe to know the United States is there, the United States is there." he added.

The president also talked about some of the main issues that the leaders of the 30 Allied nations are expected to tackle during the summit, including the rising threats of Russia and China.
