A devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar and parts of Thailand on Friday, resulting in the tragic loss of at least 152 lives and leaving hundreds injured.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the quake was shallow, with a depth of just 10 kilometers, and had its epicenter near the central city of Mandalay.
According to state-run MRTV, the quake has claimed 144 lives and injured 732 individuals in Myanmar alone. The destruction was severe, with buildings collapsing, including a temple and a bridge. In Thailand, eight people were confirmed dead in Bangkok, including seven construction workers trapped under a collapsed high-rise building, reported The Guardian.
Rescue teams in Bangkok are continuing efforts to save dozens of construction workers feared trapped. Drones are being used to detect body heat, and rescue dogs have been deployed to aid in the search. The collapsed building, a 30-floor high-rise intended for government offices, remains a focal point of the rescue mission.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has activated its emergency management system, preparing medical supplies and coordinating logistics from its Geneva headquarters. The WHO spokesperson emphasized the need for trauma injury supplies, expecting numerous injuries that will require urgent care. Meanwhile, Myanmar’s anti-junta militias, known as the people’s defense forces, have pledged humanitarian assistance despite ongoing conflict.
Pope Francis expressed his sorrow for the loss of life and devastation, offering prayers for the victims and emergency responders. UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy also extended his condolences, advising British nationals in affected areas to follow government guidelines and remain vigilant as aftershocks are expected.
