Messi-Yamal old photo: Did Jimmy Fallon expose 2026 FIFA WC 'rigged'?

New York: Did Jimmy Fallon just expose the 2026 FIFA World Cup as "rigged" by producing a 19-year-old photograph of Lionel Messi bathing baby Lamine Yamal as evidence? That is the impression left by countless social media posts now circulating online, many of them sharing only a clipped version of the late-night host's monologue.

In the viral segment, Fallon appeared to suggest that FIFA had been scripting the World Cup for nearly two decades, using the famous 2007 photograph of a young Messi holding and bathing infant Yamal during a UNICEF charity photoshoot as his "proof." The clip quickly fuelled fresh conspiracy chatter across social media.

But the claim was never real.

Fallon was performing a parody monologue on NBC's The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, poking fun at the internet's fascination with conspiracy theories ahead of the 2026 World Cup final. The episode, aired on July 15, 2026, featured guests Zendaya and Chrissy Metz.

Playing along with the joke, Fallon stitched together a string of increasingly absurd coincidences. Messi is now 39 but was 20 when the photograph was taken, leaving a difference of 19. Yamal is 19 years old and wears the No. 19 shirt. Messi himself wore No. 19 at Barcelona when the picture was taken. Even the World Cup final, Fallon noted, was scheduled for July 19. He then escalated the joke further with an intentionally ridiculous "final piece of evidence" involving envelopes hidden beneath audience seats, making it clear the entire routine was a satire of online conspiracy culture rather than an accusation against FIFA.
