Washington: In an unprecedented move, First Lady Melania Trump wrote a letter calling for peace in Ukraine, which was hand-delivered to Russian President Vladimir Putin by her husband, President Donald Trump, during their Friday meeting in Alaska.
The letter, while not explicitly naming Ukraine, urged Putin to consider the plight of children caught in the conflict, appealing to “an innocence which stands above geography, government, and ideology.” Melania Trump highlighted that Putin could “singlehandedly restore” the “melodic laughter” of children affected by the fighting.
“In protecting the innocence of these children, you will do more than serve Russia alone — you serve humanity itself,” she wrote on official White House stationery.
A copy of the letter was first obtained by Fox News Digital and later shared on social media by supporters of the president, including Attorney General Pam Bondi. The first lady stressed that Putin could help these children with just the stroke of a pen.
Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, which began in 2022, has involved taking Ukrainian children from their country to be raised as Russians. The Associated Press documented these abductions, and the International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant for Putin, holding him personally responsible for the war crimes associated with the forced removal of Ukrainian children.
