Man fired 70 rounds at Chicago Independence Day parade

Chicago: The man who opened fire at an Independence Day parade in Chicago's suburb had fired 70 rounds and fled from initial capture by blending into the crowd, Associated Press reported citing police.

The gunfire attack had killed at least six people.

During the gruesome incident, the shots fired were mistaken at first as fireworks, but later, the crowd of hundreds of people fled in terror in Highland Park, on the shores of Lake Michigan.

Authorities detained a suspect Monday evening in a traffic stop that led to a brief chase. Police initially described the man as a person of interest, but a spokesman for the Lake County Major Crime Task Force said Tuesday that he is now considered a suspect.

Charges were expected to be announced soon, according to a spokeswoman for the Lake County state's attorney, Sara Avalos.

Authorities have not revealed a motive for the attack.
