Liz Truss becomes British Prime Minister

London: Britain chose Liz Truss of governing Conservative Party as the new Prime Minister of the country on Monday, Reuters reported,

Truss secured 81,326 votes against the former finance minister and Indian origin Rishi Sunak's 60,399 votes to seal the big seat.

She said that the poll battle was fierce and praised her opponent Sunak.

After the results were announced, Truss told the country that she would deliver a bold plan to cut taxes and grow the British economy. She can address the energy crisis and deal with people's energy bills as well as long-term issues on the country's energy supply, she said.

The fresh elections for the nation's premiere happened after former PM Boris Johnson was forced to resign last July due to a months-long scandal. While Johnson will travel to Scotland to meet Queen Elizabeth to tender his resignation, Truss will meet the queen after him to be asked to form a government.

Truss will be the Conservatives' fourth prime minister since a 2015 election, since when the country has gone through a crisis after crisis, according to Reuters. There is a long recession forecast, too, due to sky-rocketing inflation, which reached 10.1% in July. Regarding this, Truss had promised to act quickly, saying that she would come up with a plan within a week.

During her poll campaign, she had hinted at scrapping tax increases and cutting other levies, though some economists argued that it would cause fuel inflation.
