Italy to deploy naval forces to protect Italian ships in Bab al-Mandab

Rome: Renewed fighting in Yemen has prompted Italy to deploy naval forces, with Defence Minister Guido Crosetto announcing measures to protect Italian ships navigating the strategically vital Bab al-Mandeb Strait, according to a report by Middle East Monitor.

Speaking at a maritime forum, Crosetto said escalating clashes along Yemen’s western coast were disrupting navigation through the waterway connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden. He said the renewed concerns were compounding disruptions affecting the Strait of Hormuz and deepening the economic impact of wider regional tensions.

Crosetto said he had decided, in coordination with Italy’s Chief of the Defence Staff, to mobilise the Italian Navy and take measures to protect Italian vessels transiting the strait. He said Italy has the military capability to safeguard its ships and stressed that authorities must respond swiftly to developments affecting maritime security.

The minister warned against delays in decision-making, saying they could worsen an already complex situation and create repercussions for Italy’s economy and citizens.

He also cautioned that disruptions to major maritime routes could delay goods deliveries and raise transportation costs, eventually increasing prices for households and businesses.

Bab al-Mandeb is a major maritime chokepoint linking the Indian Ocean, the Red Sea, and the Suez Canal. Disruptions can force vessels to take longer routes around Africa, increasing shipping times and costs.
