Dhaka: Following the intense pressure from the protest, the Chief Justice of Bangladesh agreed to resign. Protesters mobilized heavy demonstrations around the Supreme Court of the country, which led to the development.
It was ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina who appointed Obaidul Hassan, who is widely seen as a loyalist of Awami League and Hasina, as CJ of Bangladesh. The protesters posted an ultimatum for the CJ and demanded his resignation.
Protests in Bangladesh, a wider unrest in the past few weeks, had witnessed the death of more than 450 people. These include dozens of police officers.
Meanwhile, the police union declared a strike and refused to come to work until their safety was assured. This has complicated the situation in the strife-ridden nation
On Friday, an interim government was formed here under the leadership of Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus. He appealed for religious unity in the country after widespread reports of communal conflicts.
It was last Monday that former Prime Minister and Awami League supremo Sheikh Hassina resigned from office and fled from Bangladesh to India. The severe protests, conflict and the ensuing pressure made Hasina step down from a 15-year rule. Hasina has been staying in New Delhi and has plans to return to the country to contest in elections, NDTV reported.
NDTV also reports that many homes and businesses of Hindus in the country, who are minorities there, were vandalized in the past week, and this has prompted them to try and flee to India.
