New York: Republican leader Nikki Haley has urged India to work on a solution with the White House to ‘move past the turbulence’, referring to the US tariff on India over Russian oil imports.
Haley’s warning comes just as the relationship between both countries worsened after Trump administration imposed above 50 per cent tariffs on Indian exports.
Taking to social platform X, Haley wrote ‘India must take Trump's point over Russian oil seriously, and work with the White House to find a solution. The sooner the better. Decades of friendship and good will between the world's two largest democracies provide a solid basis to move past the current turbulence. Navigating issues like trade disagreements and Russian oil imports demands hard dialogue’.
In what appears to be an advice, she said that ‘we should not lose sight of what matters most: our shared goals. To face China, the United States must have a friend in India’.
Writing in Newsweek earlier, Haley pointed out to the US authorities that ties between India and the US are close to a breaking point.
Urging Washington not to treat India as an adversary, she said that it was important to bring the ties between both countries back on track if the US wanted to contain China’s growling global ambitions.
She asked the Trump administration not to allow tariffs and the US claim of involvement in India-Pakistan truce to drive a wedge between both countries.
The Trump administration imposed secondary tariffs on India for buying Russian oil, straining the relationship between both countries in recent weeks.
Alongside, President Trump claimed to have helped India and Pakistan arrive at a truce during the military conflict ‘Operation Sindoor’ following Pahalgam terror attack.
After the US tariffs of above 50 percent on Indian exports, New Delhi called it ‘unfair, unjustified and unreasonable’ with PM Modi stressing that India would never compromise with the interests of its farmers and fishermen.
