Hamas attack on Israel: over 500 dead in land-air-sea strike

Tel Aviv: More than 500 casualties have been reported in Israel as a result of a surprise attack launched by Hamas, the militant group in the Gaza Strip.

The armed wing of Hamas has declared this operation as "Operation Al-Aqsa Flood" and claims to have fired over 5,000 rockets in what they refer to as the "first strike of 20 minutes." Hamas militant leader Mohamed Deif conveyed a message, stating their determination to end what they perceive as unaccountable recklessness by the enemy.

Haunting visuals of Gazan residents fleeing their homes in border areas have emerged, depicting the grim reality of this crisis. Men and women are seen carrying blankets and essential supplies as they move away from the border with Israel.

The recent violence was preceded by Hamas' call for action against the Israeli occupation, citing ongoing Israeli actions across Palestinian territories, especially at the holy site of Al-Aqsa in Jerusalem.

This outbreak of violence follows escalating tensions, including Israel's closure of its borders to Gazan workers. So far this year, the conflict has claimed the lives of 247 Palestinians, 32 Israelis, and two foreigners, encompassing both combatants and civilians.

The situation has rapidly unfolded, leading to significant loss of life and a state of war declared by Israel.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated unequivocally that Israel is at war and has vowed that Hamas will face an unprecedented price for its actions. In a video message, he addressed the citizens of Israel, emphasising that this is not merely an operation or escalation but a full-scale war.

Sirens blared across Jerusalem and Israel as reports of rocket impacts emerged from southern and central regions. Civilians have been advised to stay near shelters, and those residing near the Gaza Strip have been urged to remain at home.

Over 5,000 rockets were launched from Gaza into Israel, causing widespread panic as loud sirens blared across the country. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported that Hamas militants, whom they consider terrorists, infiltrated Israeli territory, using tactics such as paragliders and firing at passing cars on the roads.

Israel's Defence Minister, Yoav Gallant, condemned Hamas for its actions, describing them as a "grave mistake." He emphasised that IDF troops are actively engaged in combat against the enemy in multiple locations.

The Indian embassy in Israel has issued an advisory to its citizens, urging them to remain vigilant and adhere to safety protocols recommended by local authorities. The embassy has set up a helpline and email address for citizens to seek assistance.

The Israel Defense Forces have declared a state of readiness for war, responding to the significant rocket fire from Gaza and reports of terrorist infiltrations into Israeli territory. They have vowed to defend the country against these threats.
