New Delhi: The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) expressed ‘sincere gratitude’ to PM Modi for wishing speedy recovery to its ailing leader Begum Khaleda Zia.

Responding to the message, BNP in a post on X said : ‘BNP expresses its sincere gratitude to the Honourable Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, for his thoughtful message and kind wishes for the speedy recovery of BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia. BNP deeply appreciates this gesture of goodwill and the expression of readiness to extend support’.

BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia reportedly remains in critical condition after she was admitted to a private hospital down with a chest infection on November 23.

It is reported citing party official that infection affected both her heart and lungs.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said ‘We have sought prayers from the people across the country after Jummah prayers for the recovery of the ‘Mother of Democracy’, Begum Khaleda Zia. We pray that she may recover and return to the people to get the opportunity to work for the country.’

The interim administration, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, said on Saturday that there is ‘no restrictions or objections’ against Tarique Rahman , Zia’s only son and BNP’s acting chairman, returning to the country from London where has been staying since 2008.

The response came after Tarique Rahman said that his return to the country ‘depends on factors beyond his control’.

It is reported that since Sheikh Hasin’s ouster from power following student-uprising last year, BNP’s influence has increased in the country.
