Earthquake of 4.6 magnitude hits Russian Republic of Dagestan

An earthquake of magnitude 4.6 on the Richter scale hit the Russian Republic of Dagestan on Saturday, at4:05 am local time, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC). However, there have been no reports on casualties or infrastructure damage so far.

EMSC notes that the quake was located 21 kilometers (13 miles) northwest of the town of DagestanskiyeOgni at a depth of 10 kilometers. As per the preliminary seismic data, the tremor was felt in the area of the epicenterby many people.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) reviewed the quake at 5.1 while the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) and the IndonesianMeteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) recorded it at 4.5 magnitude.

Dagestan is located in a seismologically active region due to the constant slight movements of the Arabian tectonic plate toward the Eurasian one.
