Tehran: Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has announced the downing of a U.S. MQ-1 surveillance drone after it allegedly entered Iranian territorial waters. The development was reported by Iran's state broadcaster IRIB, which said the aircraft was detected and neutralised by Iran's advanced air defence systems shortly after crossing into the country's maritime boundary.
According to Iranian military authorities, the drone came under surveillance as soon as it breached Iran's maritime territory and was subsequently targeted by the IRGC's missile defence network. The incident marks another escalation in tensions between Tehran and Washington at a time when relations between the two countries remain highly strained.
Iranian military circles have reiterated that any violation of the country's sovereignty will be met with a firm response. Authorities also indicated that Iran is prepared to respond forcefully to any future military actions directed against the country.
The latest incident has further heightened fears of a renewed confrontation between the United States and Iran in the strategically important Gulf region. Diplomatic efforts surrounding a possible Iran-U.S. peace agreement have already stalled, adding to concerns over regional stability.
Iran has also issued strong warnings to U.S. naval vessels and commercial ships attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz without authorisation. The IRGC further stated that it had brought down a U.S. MQ-9 drone earlier this week, underscoring what Tehran describes as its readiness to defend its airspace and maritime borders.
During the recent conflict involving Iran and the United States, Iranian forces claimed to have shot down multiple American aircraft, including drones and warplanes, resulting in significant financial losses for the U.S. military and demonstrating Iran's growing defensive capabilities.
