Discovering the origins of Covid 19 a moral imperative: WHO

Geneva: The head of the World Health Organization said all hypotheses regarding the origins of the Covid19 must be explored.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus tweeted that finding its origins is a scientific imperative for preventing future outbreaks.

He also said that it is a moral imperative too ‘for the sake of the millions of people who died and those who live with long covid’.

Meanwhile a US agency, as reported by the Wall Street Journal, linked the origins of the Covid 19 to an ‘unintended Chinese laboratory leak’.

The revelation by the US agency has put pressure on the WHO to come up with answers, according to Reuters.

Beijing denies the US agency’s findings, as it has been doing since many experts suggested human involvement behind the outbreak.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus was marking with a tweet the three years since the WHO first described COVID-19 with the word ‘pandemic’.

An open letter by activists, politicians and academics this weekend called up on the UN agency to focus on preventing ‘unequal rollout’ of Covid 19 vaccine.

They claimed that disparity in vaccine rollout led to 1.3 million preventable deaths.

A WHO-led team that spent weeks in 2021 in Wuhan where the first case was reported said at the time that Covid 19 had probably been transmitted from bats to humans.

The team also said that further research was needed but China dismissed it saying that no more visits were needed.
