COP27: European Union rejects Egypt's emission-cut proposal

Sharm el Sheikh/Egypt: The European Union rejected a COP27 proposal by Egypt on emission cuts saying that it was pretty ambitious towards the cause. On Saturday, the EU said that it would prefer "no result" than a bad one from the climate talks, Agence France-Presse reported

The European Commission Vice President Frans Timmermans EU is willing to quit the negotiations fully, but they are still hoping for a good outcome out of the talks.

But, COP27 president Sameh Shoukry claimed that most of the nations which attended the talks stated that the Egyptian proposal was "balanced". He reacted to the EU's criticism of the proposal.

Shoukry told reporters that the vast majority of the parties who attended the talks considered the text as balanced, constituting a potential breakthrough that could lead to a consensus.

The French energy transition ministry told AFP that the Egyptian presidency is doubtful of the gains made in Glasgow on emission reductions, referring to COP26 joined in 2021. He said that the Egyptian proposal is unacceptable to France and the European Union countries.

The 2015 Paris Agreement has agreed with countries to restrict global warming to "well below" two degrees Celcius to the pre-industrial era.

The agreement put a goal of keeping the rise in temperature to 1.5C, as per scientists' warnings, to keep the globe from catastrophic climatic outbursts. The goal was accepted by the member nations in the COP26, and countries agreed to review their annual carbon reduction goals. However, the 1.5C target is nothing less than ambitious.

The French ministry said that while putting forward the proposal, the Egyptian presidency ignored the obligation of countries to regularly strengthen their national goals to meet the 1.5C. It added that the EU is united in moving towards the target agreed upon in Glasgow.
