Beijing: Students at Nanjing Tech University in eastern China are protesting against another coronavirus lockdown imposed by the authorities.
Millions in China are still facing restrictions due to the zero-Covid policy. According to a Japanese firm Nomura, 53 cities that house a third of China's population are still facing restrictions, reported AFP.
In a viral video, students were seen shouting: "Your power is given to you by students, not by yourselves. Serve the students!" Some also threatened to resort to violent demonstrations like the factory run in central China by a Taiwanese tech giant. "If you touch us you will become the second Foxconn!"
The protests took place after the university announced that the campus will be sealed off for five days because of one Covid case. This meant students cannot go home and protestors were demanding that they be allowed to leave the campus. Many educational institutions in China have been imposing similar restrictions for the past few months. Students need to apply for permission to leave the campus and visitors are not allowed. Many students were looking forward to going home for the winter holidays.
A police car was also seen arriving at the scene and university officials promised students they will compile their complaints.
