London: Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has condemned the handling of Covid-19 regulations breach allegations, calling it bizarre and unacceptable, Agence France-Presse reported.
The former premier is facing an investigation into the “Partygate” scandal.
On Tuesday, the British government handed over material on the alleged violations by the ex-premier during a pandemic, two police forces.
A revolt within their own party ousted Boris Johnson from his PM’s chair summer of last year. Over months, he faced accusations of violating lockdown mandates along with other scandals. However, he kept denying the allegations saying that neither he nor his staff breached any pandemic time restrictions, holding booze gatherings at PM’s office, Downing Street.
However, the Metropolitan Police in London have issued scores of fines to his aides post a criminal probe. Thus, Johnson has become the first incumbent Prime Minister of the UK to break the law.
Further, the Met Police confirmed that it is scrutinising the fresh information it received last week on Johnson’s “potential breaches of the pandemic rules at Downing Street between June 2020 and May 2021.
AFP reports that the information was handed over to the police by the Cabinet Office, which supports the prime ministers and ensures the effective running of government.
Now, the government is working on preparing a public inquiry into UK’s Covid-19 response.
