Bengal cops nab Bangladeshi who smuggled Hadi killers across border

Kolkata: West Bengal Police’s Special Task Force (STF) arrested Bangladeshi national Philip Sangma on Saturday for allegedly aiding two suspects in the murder of Sharif Osman Hadi, a Bangladeshi youth leader, escape to India, an officer said Sunday.

The arrest followed a tip-off, with STF nabbing Sangma in Nadia district's Shantipur Bypass area. It comes a week after apprehending the primary suspects—Faisal Karim Masud (37), alias Rahul from Patuakhali, and Alamgir Hossain (34) from Dhaka—in North 24 Parganas' Bongaon.

Interrogation revealed Sangma facilitated their border crossing from Haluaghat (Bangladesh) to Dalupara (Meghalaya) for money. He confessed to helping the duo enter India post-murder, then fleeing Bangladesh himself to evade arrest. Sangma stayed in touch with the suspects and was attempting to return when caught, police said.

A court remanded him to police custody Sunday.

Hadi, 32, Inqilab Moncho spokesperson, was shot dead in Dhaka on December 12, 2025, succumbing in Singapore on December 18. His killing fueled unrest ahead of Bangladesh's February 12 elections, where Tarique Rahman’s BNP alliance won 216 of 297 seats.
