New York: Social media platform X on Tuesday announced that it will charge $1 annual fee for basic features as part of testing a new subscription model, Reuters reported.
Named as ‘Not A Bot’, the subscription m will charge for likes, reposts, and bookmarking posts on X’s web version.The new subscription model is aimed at combating bots and spammers, according to X.
The fee will vary in countries based the exchange rate, the report said adding that new model will be rolled out first in New Zealand and Philippines.
While the test is not going to affect existing users, the new users, who choose not to subscribe, can only view and read posts, watch videos and follow accounts.
In the run up to buying the company earlier, bots were a major issue for Elon Musk.
Alongside other changes on the platform, X introduced viewing limit on tweets for ensuring ‘the authenticity’ of the platform’s user base.
During a meeting with X’s lenders earlier this month, CEO Linda Yaccarino said the company would test three tiers of its subscription services taking into account ‘the number of ads shown to the user’.
