Windows 10 support to end in October 2025, users urged to prepare for transition

Microsoft has announced that it will officially end support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025, marking the end of an era for the operating system that has been a staple of personal computing for nearly a decade.

The decision means millions of computers worldwide will no longer receive technical assistance, software updates, or critical security patches after the deadline.

While Windows 10 devices will continue to operate beyond the cut-off date, experts warn that using the system without ongoing security updates will expose users to heightened risks from viruses, malware, and other cyber threats.

Microsoft has strongly advised users to transition to a supported version of Windows well before the deadline to ensure both security and functionality.

The company is offering several pathways for users. Those whose PCs meet the minimum requirements for Windows 11 can upgrade directly to the newer operating system, with many already receiving prompts to do so. For users whose devices are incompatible, Microsoft suggests investing in new hardware with Windows 11 pre-installed, designed to offer a more seamless and secure experience.

In recognition of users who may need additional time, Microsoft has also introduced an Extended Security Updates (ESU) programme. This option, available for a fee, will provide critical security protections for Windows 10 devices for up to one year after the official end-of-support date.

Microsoft has emphasised that upgrading to Windows 11 or moving to a new device will not only secure users against emerging threats but also provide access to new features and performance improvements.
