Twitter's Public Policy Director for India resigns

Amidst controversy over a Twitter hashtag related to the farmers' protests, Mahima Kaul, the Public Policy Director of South Asia and India resigned from her post in January after serving in the position for five years. Kaul, who resigned to focus on her personal life, shall continue to work till the end of March to support the transition, informed a senior executive.

"At the start of this year, Mahima Kaul decided to step down from her role as Twitter Public Policy Director for India and South Asia to take a well-deserved break. It's a loss for all of us at Twitter, but after more than five years in the role, we respect her desire to focus on the most important people and relationships in her personal life. Mahima will continue in her role till the end of March and will support the transition," said Monique Meche, Vice President, Twitter Public Policy.

The information comes a week after the government condemned Twitter for unilaterally unblocking 250 accounts that were allegedly tweeting and retweeting "fake, intimidatory and provocative tweets" according to the government. The government had disabled 250 accounts which used the hashtag "ModiPlanningFarmerGenocide" which the Centre alleged Twitter reinstated unilaterally. The government further added that Twitter cannot play a court's role and must comply with authorities' directions.
