Twitter launches public survey on monitoring world leaders on the platform

Twitter today released a public survey to gauge public opinion on whether world leaders on the platform must be subject to the same regulations as the remaining Twitterati. The survey shall be available till April 12th, and the questionnaire is available in 14 languages, including Hindi, Arabic, English and Urdu.

Facebook and Twitter had banned former US President Donald Trump's profile following the Capitol riot on January 6th. Following the move, the platforms have faced intense scrutiny.

While Facebook has sought its independent Oversight Board's opinion on whether the ban on Trump should continue, Twitter has sought user opinions on appropriate action when a world leader violates a rule on the platform.

"Politicians and government officials are constantly evolving how they use our service, and we want our policies to remain relevant to the ever-changing nature of political discourse on Twitter and protect the health of the public conversation," Twitter said in a blog post. "That's why we're reviewing our approach to world leaders and seeking your input."

Meanwhile, Twitter is also consulting with human rights experts, civil society organizations and academics to revise the existing policy accordingly.
