Starlink signs pact with Gujarat government to roll out satellite internet in remote areas

Elon Musk-owned satellite internet company Starlink is set to begin operations in Gujarat after signing a letter of intent with the state government, according to an official release issued on Monday.

The agreement was formalised at a ceremony in Gandhinagar in the presence of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi.

Under the letter of intent, Starlink will provide high-speed satellite-based internet connectivity in remote, border, and underserved regions of the state that currently face limited telecom infrastructure and network challenges.

As part of the pilot project, connectivity will be extended to Common Service Centres, e-governance facilities, government schools, district disaster management control rooms, ports, and wildlife sanctuary areas. Aspirational tribal districts such as Narmada and Dahod are expected to be among the key beneficiaries, with the initiative aimed at improving digital inclusion and access to essential services.

The project also seeks to strengthen connectivity for police outposts, disaster management centres, wildlife monitoring systems, and agricultural research facilities. The release said the initiative would support smart education in government schools and enable faster access to healthcare and telemedicine services at primary health centres.

A joint working group comprising representatives from the Gujarat government and Starlink will be formed to oversee and coordinate the implementation of the project.

The agreement also focuses on improving connectivity in GIDC industrial parks, highway safety systems, maritime and port operations, and coastal police networks across Gujarat.
