Paris prosecutor cybercrime unit searches French offices of Elon Musk’s X

French authorities are carrying out a search at the French offices of Elon Musk’s social media platform X as part of a criminal investigation, the Paris prosecutor’s office said on Tuesday.

In a statement, the prosecutor’s cybercrime unit said the search was being conducted with the support of Europol. The action is linked to a year-long investigation into alleged abuse of algorithms and fraudulent data extraction by X or its executives.

The prosecutor’s office said the probe was widened following complaints related to the functioning of X’s artificial intelligence chatbot, Grok.

As part of the investigation, both Musk and former X chief executive Linda Yaccarino were summoned to appear at hearings in April, according to the statement.

“At this stage, the conduct of this investigation is part of a constructive approach, with the aim of ultimately ensuring that the X platform complies with French laws, insofar as it operates on national territory,” the prosecutor’s office said.

X did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The company has previously denied accusations that it manipulated its algorithm.
