Meta plans 10% workforce cut in AI-led restructuring

Meta is planning to lay off 10 per cent of its workforce this week as part of a broader restructuring tied to its expanding artificial intelligence operations.

According to a memo shared with employees on Monday and seen by Reuters, the company will also introduce organisational changes aimed at improving AI workflows.

The layoffs are expected to begin on Wednesday, with deeper cuts planned later this year.

Meta Chief People Officer Janelle Gale told employees that around 7,000 workers would be reassigned to new AI-related initiatives while managerial roles would be eliminated. She said many teams were being reorganised using “AI native” design principles to create flatter structures with smaller groups that can move faster and take greater ownership.

The restructuring is part of Meta’s wider push to increase investments in AI and integrate AI agents into both its products and internal operations. The company plans to centre much of its future work around systems capable of autonomously carrying out tasks currently handled by employees.

The layoffs and transfers together are expected to affect about 20 per cent of Meta’s workforce. The company had 77,986 employees at the end of March, according to company filings.

New AI-focused teams include Applied AI Engineering and Agent Transformation Accelerator XFN, which are working on AI agents for workplace tasks. Another initiative, Central Analytics, is expected to focus on measuring productivity and analytics linked to AI agent development.

The changes have triggered protests from employees, with staff reportedly criticising company leadership on Meta’s internal platform Workplace. More than 1,000 employees have also signed a petition opposing the installation of mouse-tracking software used to train AI models to replicate human-computer interactions.
