India will ban Chinese smartphones costing under Rs 12,000

New Delhi: In order to promote homegrown smartphones including Lava, Micromax and others, India is all set to restrict Chinese smartphone manufactures from selling phones under Rs 12,000, in the nation, reports say.

Chinese smartphones have eaten into larger chunk of Indian market with their budget phones under Rs 15,000, often sidelining leading brands.

India's move could undercut the sales of Chinese brands like Xiaomi, Poco, Realme.

They have been dominating the affordable smartphone segment, contributing to a third of India's sales volume for the quarter through June 2022, according to India Today.

Alongside border dispute, the trade war between both the neighbours have been going on for long, with India's Enforcement Directorate charging Chinese firms like Xiaomi, Vivo, and Oppo for alleged tax evasion.

The ED froze Vivo's bank accounts in a money laundering case recently.

In another development, India asked Google and Apple to take down Indian version of PUBG Mobile from Play store as Apple App store.

The reason for blocking the mobile games not been revealed and back in2020 India banned apps including Tik Tok and others.
