Chennai: Tech giant Google and Tamil Nadu government have arrived at an agreement to manufacture brand new Pixel phones in the state, The News Minute reported citing sources.
Google will start smartphone production units in the state partnering with Iphone manufacturer Foxconn.
Alongside, the tech giant’s parent company Alphabet through its subsidiary Wing LLC will start manufacturing drones directly in the state.
Foxconn, world’s largest contract manufacturing company, is the major supplier for Apple.
It is reported that delegates from the Tamil Nadu government including Minister for Industries TRB Rajaa along with other officials, met Google officials recently.
The delegation, set up by Chief Minister MK Stalin, visited the US with investment pitches.
In what is seen as its move to reduce reliance on China, Google last year announced plans to start smartphone production in India.
Google sees the rising demand in India for premium smartphones an opportunity to sell their flagship phones at a lesser price.
