New Delhi: OpenAI’s popular AI tool, ChatGPT, experienced a global outage on Thursday, leaving millions of users unable to access the service.
Frustrated users took to social media platforms like X to report widespread issues, with many stating that ChatGPT was either not loading or failing to respond to commands.
According to Downdetector, a platform that tracks online service disruptions, thousands of users have been affected. The site recorded a sharp increase in outage reports early Thursday morning, and the numbers continued to rise as more users encountered problems.
While some users struggled to log in, others found that the chatbot was entirely unresponsive. Downdetector’s heat map, which visually represents user-reported complaints, confirmed that the outage was widespread across multiple regions.
So far, nearly 90 percent of reported issues have been linked to the ChatGPT app, while several users have also faced difficulties accessing the service via its website.
ChatGPT is down worldwide with millions of users unable to access the platform.
OpenAI has yet to issue an official statement regarding the cause or extent of the outage.
Meanwhile, users on X flooded the platform with reactions, complaints, and memes about the disruption.
“Today, I lost access to ChatGPT for 20 minutes, and it felt like 2015 when Google Search went offline for a few hours,” one user joked.
Another posted a meme captioned, "Everyone coming to X to confirm ChatGPT is down."
"ChatGPT down again??! Surprised, not surprised!!!" another user commented, expressing frustration over frequent disruptions.
One user lamented, "ChatGPT is always down right when I’m in the middle of my assignment!"
Another remarked, “Watching everyone freak out when ChatGPT is down and they have to use their brains—we truly are doomed.”
As of the time of filing this report, ChatGPT remained inaccessible.
This is not the first time the AI chatbot has faced technical difficulties. Just last month, on January 23, ChatGPT experienced a similar global disruption, preventing users from accessing it via both the web and mobile app. During that outage, Downdetector recorded thousands of complaints, with many users venting their frustration on X.
