California: Following a statement by Nvidia that practical applications for quantum computing will be around 20 years from now, Google announced that it aims to release commercial quantum computing applications in five years, Reuters reported.
Google Quantum AI said that the tech giant is optimistic about releasing commercial quantum computing applications in five years.
Reuters quoted Google Quantum AI founder and lead Hartmut Neven saying, "We're optimistic that within five years, we'll see real-world applications that are possible only on quantum computers.”
According to Google, the real-world applications it discussed are to build superior car batteries for electric cars, create new drugs and even new energy alternatives.
However, the announcement landed amid large uncertainty over when such a breakthrough could be attained, Reuters writes.
The discussions and predictions over the arrival of quantum computing are at least as old as two decades. This level of computing apparently delivers machines powers that are a thousand times more intense than traditional computers.
When traditional computers process one piece of information at a time, quantum computers, which are to use “qubits”, are expected to do several numbers at once.
Since quantum computing has the potential to melt available cyber security measures in the fields like finance and healthcare, governments and businesses have been closely watching the developments in tech.
