Sania Mirza's personal life has come into the limelight after Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik shared pictures of his wedding with Sana Javed, sparking rumors of a divorce between Sania and Shoaib.
In a statement released by Sania's team and family, they confirmed the divorce, stating that the tennis star and cricketer Shoaib Malik have been divorced for a few months.
The statement reads: "Sania has always kept her personal life away from the public eye. However, today the need has arisen for her to share that Shoaib and she have been divorced for a few months now. She wishes Shoaib well for his new journey ahead! At this sensitive period of her life, we would like to request all fans and well-wishers to refrain from indulging in any speculation and to respect her need for privacy."
Shoaib Malik, who was previously married to Indian tennis star Sania Mirza, shared a photograph on social media with his new wife, Sana Javed, using the caption "And we created you in pairs."
The couple has a five-year-old son named Izaan, who lives with Sania.
Sania's father, Imran Mirza, clarified that it was a 'khula,' referring to the right of a Muslim woman to unilaterally divorce her husband. Rumors about differences between Shoaib and Sania leading to a split have circulated since 2022, and the couple has rarely been seen together in recent years.
Shoaib and Sania tied the knot in Hyderabad, India, in April 2010 and resided in Dubai.
The news of their divorce comes amidst reports that Shoaib recently unfollowed Sania on Instagram. Sana Javed, a Pakistani actress, had previously married singer Umair Jaiswal in 2020, and reports about their divorce emerged two months ago.
