PT Usha criticizes IOA committee for failing to honor Paris Olympic medalists

Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha expressed deep concern over the Executive Committee's failure to felicitate Indian athletes who won medals at the Paris Olympics.

Despite India securing six medals, including two historic bronze medals by young shooter Manu Bhaker, Usha accused the committee of showing "complete disregard" for the athletes' achievements. She revealed that plans to honor the medallists with cash awards ranging from Rs 50 lakh to Rs 1 crore, as well as Rs 15 lakh to Rs 25 lakh for their coaches, were stalled by the Finance Committee, led by IOA Treasurer Sahdev Yadav.

Usha, in a statement, criticized the committee's refusal to approve a preparatory grant of Rs 2 lakh for each Olympic-bound athlete and Rs 1 lakh for each coach, arguing that this financial support would have been crucial ahead of the Olympic Games. She described the decision as a "lack of understanding" and emphasized the need to recognize the athletes' efforts.

Drawing a comparison with previous IOA leadership, Usha highlighted how the Tokyo 2021 Olympic medallists were honored with a successful ceremony, even amidst the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. She questioned why the current committee had not done the same and expressed disappointment in the lack of commitment from some members, particularly those who are former athletes themselves.

Usha reaffirmed her dedication to Indian athletes, pledging to ensure they receive the recognition and support they deserve.

She also responded to allegations from 12 Executive Council members, who had accused her of running the IOA in an "autocratic" manner, dismissing these claims as "malicious and false." Usha criticized the dissenting members for prioritizing personal power and financial gain over the welfare of Indian sports, while also highlighting concerns over the track records of several members, including accusations of gender bias and sexual harassment.

She concluded by urging the Executive Committee to take immediate action to honor the athletes who have made the nation proud.
