BJP MP Hema Malini's remarks on wrestler Vinesh Phogat's disqualification from the 2024 Paris Olympics have sparked widespread backlash.
Phogat was disqualified on Wednesday morning ahead of the women's 50kg final for being 100 grams overweight.
Commenting on the disqualification, Malini said, "Now we know how important it is to keep the weight in control. I hope she (Vinesh Phogat) loses those 100 grams quickly." This remark was made outside the Parliament and perceived by many as insensitive and mocking.
Malini further elaborated to PTI, "It is surprising that Phogat was disqualified because of 100 grams. This shows how crucial it is to maintain our weight. This is a lesson for all artists, women, and everyone else that even 100 grams can make a difference. It is unfortunate. I hope she loses those 100 grams quickly, but we won't get the Olympic medal."
The internet was quick to react, with many users expressing their discontent over Malini's comments. One user wrote, "At least try to hide your happiness," while another commented, "This proves that it is not necessary for someone who is a protagonist in films to be one in real life as well."
Another user accused Malini of showing insensitivity, saying, "Look at how shamelessly she is smiling about the disqualification. These vultures need to be thrown out of power."
Some netizens speculated about a potential conspiracy, blaming management issues for Phogat's disqualification. One user stated, "Her reaction indicated a conspiracy. It is the failure of management. Although the Wrestling Federation of India is suspended, the management remains the same."
Vinesh Phogat's disqualification, just hours before she could compete for a gold medal, left her without a medal.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also intervened, speaking with IOA President PT Usha to gather firsthand information and explore options to support Phogat. Modi urged Usha to file a strong protest regarding the disqualification if it could help Phogat's case.
