Bengaluru: Following last year’s stampede during the victory celebrations of Royal Challengers Bengaluru, authorities implemented tighter security and stricter crowd control measures for the opening match of the IPL-19 season between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad in the city on Saturday.
Security arrangements were noticeably enhanced, with officials conducting detailed ticket checks at multiple entry points. Spectators were reportedly not allowed to linger outside the stadium gates and were instead directed either to enter the venue or leave the area, resulting in fewer crowds gathering outside compared to previous matches, TNIE reported.
To manage the situation, around 2,000 personnel—including law and order police, traffic police, civil defence staff, home guards and traffic wardens—were deployed to regulate movement and maintain order around the stadium.
Fans began arriving several hours in advance, creating a vibrant atmosphere as the venue filled with supporters dressed in red. Many were seen waving flags, cheering, taking photos, and sporting team jerseys or face paint in support of Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
Despite the large turnout, officials were able to keep the situation largely under control. While a few minor scuffles and brief disturbances were reported near some gates, the police responded promptly and handled them effectively, ensuring overall safety. The strengthened arrangements were seen as contributing to a more organised and secure experience for spectators, even as the enthusiasm and excitement among fans remained high.
