Zurich: FIFA has taken decisive action by suspending Luis Rubiales, the president of the Spanish football association, due to his involvement in a controversial incident at the conclusion of the Women's World Cup final.
Reports indicate that Rubiales has been handed a 90-day suspension and is now prohibited from contacting Spanish Women's World Cup player Jenni Hermoso in any manner. The incident in question revolves around Rubiales kissing Hermoso following Spain's victory over England. However, it has come to light that Hermoso did not provide her consent for the gesture.
World football's governing body stated, "(We) decided today to provisionally suspend Mr. Luis Rubiales from all football-related activities at national and international level." The outcome of their disciplinary proceedings is pending at the moment.
The aftermath of this incident has reverberated globally, eliciting criticism from various quarters.
The footballers' union Futpro revealed that 81 players were participating in a strike, vowing not to play for the national side until Rubiales was removed from his position.
Expressing solidarity with Hermoso, players from the World Cup runners-up England issued a statement on their social media platforms, collectively signed "The Lionesses". "Unacceptable actions allowed to happen by a sexist and patriarchal organisation. Abuse is abuse and we have all seen the truth. The behaviour of those who think they are invincible must not be tolerated and people shouldn't need convincing to take action against any form of harassment. We all stand with you, Jenni Hermoso, and all players of the Spanish team."
Despite mounting pressure, Rubiales remained steadfast and made it clear that he would not step down from his role.
Before the commencement of the tournament, 15 players from the Spanish team had initiated a similar strike against the federation and coach Jorge Vilda. However, during the course of events, several players rescinded their stance, and three were part of the triumphant team's journey in Australia and New Zealand.
In the wake of this controversy, numerous players, including the double Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas and player of the tournament Aitana Bonmati, have expressed their support for Hermoso through messages on social media. Some messages even include the phrase "it's over," hinting at a desire for a change in Rubiales' leadership within Spanish football.
