CWG 2022 Race Walk: Priyanka wins Silver; breaks record

Birmingham: Indian athlete Priyanka Goswami walked to Silver in the women's 10,000m race walk at the 2022 Commonwealth Games here on Saturday. Priyanka has broken a three-year-old national record to clinch the medal at the Alexander Stadium, IANS reported.

With the medal, Priyanka became the first Indian woman to hit a CWG medal in race walk and the second Indian to do so (Harminder Singh had won Bronze to become the first Indian in 2010 Delhi CWG). The Tokyo Olympian took 43:38.82 minutes to finish the event and broke Khushbir Kaur's 44:33.5 from 2017 and her previous personal best of 48:30.35.

This is the third medal for India in CWG 2022 athletics after Tejaswin Shankar's Bronze in the high jump and Murali Sreeshankar's Silver in the long jump.

It was Australia's Jemima Montag who won the Gold with a Games record time of 42:34.00. Jemima had also hit Gold in the 2018 Gold Coast CWG. Kenya's Emily Wamusyi Ngii clinched Bronze with 43:50.00 on Saturday, making a new African record.

Priyanka, the 26-year-old Olympian, holds the national record in both women's 20km and 35 km race walk.

In the meantime, Priyanka's compatriot Bhawna Jat also clocked a personal best of 47:14.13 but finished eighth in an eight-woman field.
