T20I: India suffer 2nd-biggest defeat as New Zealand stage a comeback
Auckland: Glenn Phillips' explosive century and Jacob Duffy's four-wicket burst powered New Zealand to a crushing 87-run victory over India in the fourth T20 International at Eden Park on Friday, ending the visitors' hopes of a clean sweep.
After winning the toss and electing to field, India watched the hosts pile up a record 259/7 in 20 overs, their highest-ever T20I total. In reply, India collapsed to 172/9, suffering their second-heaviest defeat by runs in the format.
Phillips smashed 107 off just 49 deliveries, including 10 sixes and six boundaries. Michael Bracewell added further damage with 65 off 25 balls, striking six sixes and four fours. Phillips plundered 32 runs in the 16th over, including four consecutive sixes off Nitish Kumar Reddy.
Duffy then wrecked India's chase in the opening over, dismissing Sanju Samson (4) and Ishan Kishan (0) off successive deliveries. Abhishek Sharma (27) and captain Shreyas Iyer (22) also departed during the powerplay, leaving India reeling at 56/4.
Tilak Varma top-scored with 35, while Naman Dhir contributed 28 and Nitish Kumar Reddy made 21. Duffy finished with 4/23, while Mitchell Santner and Matthew Fisher claimed two wickets each.
The victory was New Zealand's first of the five-match series after India had secured an unassailable 3-0 lead. The hosts also surpassed their previous biggest T20I victory over India, an 80-run win in Wellington in 2019.
