This milestone was achieved despite Bangladesh facing a comprehensive defeat against India.

However, he managed to claim the crucial wicket of Indian captain Rohit Sharma, who became Shakib's 50th victim in the tournament. Shakib reached this milestone in his 42nd T20 World Cup match. The next closest player is Pakistan's Shahid Afridi, who took 39 wickets during his career in the tournament. Sri Lankan fast bowler Lasith Malinga follows with 38 wickets.
Sri Lanka's current captain, Wanindu Hasaranga, is close to surpassing Malinga's record. He is just one wicket shy but will have to wait until the 2026 edition of the event to potentially achieve this, as Sri Lanka was eliminated in the group stage this year.

Despite Shakib's historic achievement, Bangladesh struggled in the match. After winning the toss and opting to field, they allowed India to post a formidable total of 196/5. Key contributions came from Hardik Pandya, who scored an unbeaten 50 off 27 balls, and supporting roles by Virat Kohli (37), Shivam Dube (34), and Rishabh Pant (36).
In their chase, Bangladesh faltered, with only captain Najmul Hossain Shanto showing resistance with his 40 runs. India's bowlers, including Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, and Kuldeep Yadav, dismantled the Bangladeshi batting line-up, securing a 50-run victory for India.
