'How many times…' Gavaskar ridicules Gill over ridiculous wicket

Mumbai: When India lost to New Zealand on the third Test on Sunday after suffering another batting disaster on Day 3 of the third Test against New Zealand (NZ) at the Wankhede Stadium here.

Indian batters fell prey to NZ bowlers Ajaz Patel and Glenn Philips. Among them, Shubmann Gill's wicket was so ridiculous that commentator Sunil Gavaskar did not shy away from ridiculing him. Former cricketer Gavaskar said that Gill has issues with judging a ball.

Gill had an excellent first innings with a score of 90 and was expected to blast in the second innings but couldn't carry his hot form from the first. Ajaz Patel clean bowled Gill after the latter, who is known as the 'prince' of Indian cricket, failed to read the ball and went for a leave. The ball ended up crashing his stumps, and he was left with a completely puzzled look, which was evident from the action replays.

Ajaz's wicket-taking delivery to Gill came straight after pitching, which the batter did not expect, and the ball hit the stumps.

NDTV quoted commentator Gavaskar, "How many times have we seen Gill get out leaving the ball. To spinners, to fast bowlers... judgment of which ball to leave, which ball to play is something he will have to work on."

On the day, India's top-order batters, like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Sarfaraz Khan  fell scoring cheap scores. It was Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja who made a fair partnership for a rescue. Both of them were taken out by Ajaz Patel, but only after Pant scoring a half ton. He had the nerve to score 9 boundaries and a six when his colleagues failed.

India has already lost the test series after getting beaten in the first two matches. If they could win the Mumbai Test, their hopes of making it to the World Test Championship final might stay alive.
