Dinesh Karthik has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket, marking the end of a distinguished career.
This announcement comes shortly after his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL). Karthik’s final game as a professional cricketer was the IPL 2024 Eliminator match, where his team, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), faced Rajasthan Royals (RR).
In a heartfelt social media post on Saturday, Karthik confirmed his decision to retire. "I put my playing days behind me," he wrote. The RCB vs RR match, which ended in a loss for RCB, saw Karthik taking off his gloves for the last time. The wicket-keeper batter acknowledged the fans, participating in a lap of appreciation with his teammates.
A poignant moment during the post-match proceedings saw Virat Kohli embracing Karthik, who appeared visibly emotional. As Karthik walked back to the dressing room, RCB players formed a guard of honour, a gesture that highlighted the respect and admiration he garnered throughout his career.
Although Karthik had previously announced his IPL retirement, his recent post confirmed his departure from all forms of cricket. He expressed gratitude for the overwhelming affection and support he received, writing: "I've been overwhelmed by the affection, support, and love I have received in the last few days. My deepest gratitude and sincere thanks to all the fans who have made this feeling possible."
Karthik elaborated on his decision, stating, "Having given it plenty of thought for some time now, I have decided to move on from playing representative cricket. I officially announce my retirement and put my playing days behind me as I square up for the new challenges that lie ahead."
He thanked his coaches, captains, selectors, teammates, and support staff for making his journey enjoyable.
Karthik also expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to represent India, considering himself fortunate to have earned the goodwill of so many fans and friends. He acknowledged the unwavering support of his parents and his wife, Dipika, a professional sportsperson who often paused her career to support his journey.
"Of course, to all the fans and followers of our great game, a massive thank you! Cricket and cricketers wouldn't be the same without your support and good wishes," he added.
In a prior conversation with Cricbuzz, Karthik had mentioned that while he felt physically capable of continuing for another three years, he was not mentally prepared to prolong his career as a professional cricketer.
