Brisbane 2032 Olympic sports programme to be finalised in April 2027

Dakar: The sports programme for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games will be finalised at the 147th IOC Session in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, in April 2027, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced.

The revised timeline was approved by the IOC Executive Board during its meeting in Dakar ahead of the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games.

Brisbane 2032 will be the first Olympic Games to use the IOC’s new sports programme methodology, introduced under its “Fit for the Future” reforms. The approach is intended to make the Olympic programme more flexible, relevant and sustainable, with disciplines evaluated against objective criteria such as athlete representation, global appeal, cost and operational complexity.

As a next step, the IOC Executive Board plans to confirm in December 2026 which existing disciplines will be automatically recommended for inclusion, which existing and candidate disciplines will undergo comparative assessment, and which candidate disciplines will be excluded from further consideration.

Most existing disciplines are expected to be automatically recommended for the programme.

The IOC said the methodology was developed in close consultation with international sports federations and will guide decisions on future Olympic programmes, with Brisbane 2032 serving as its first test.

The IOC will work with the Brisbane 2032 Organising Committee to apply the system flexibly, taking into account the organisers’ advanced preparations and operational planning.

The Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games are scheduled for July 23 to August 8, 2032. Brisbane was nominated as the IOC Future Host Commission’s preferred candidate on February 24, 2021, and its bid was approved at the 138th IOC Session in Tokyo on July 21, 2021.
