Slipping from his election promises regarding the consideration of weapon sales to Israel amid the ongoing bombardment of Gaza, the UK’s Labour Party Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, made it clear that there is no plan to halt equipping Israel with weapons, claiming it is necessary for Israel’s self-defence.
Starmer justified his decision, citing the heightened threat from Iran, solely for defensive use, while Israel has opened multiple war fronts, disregarding international laws.
This statement comes in the wake of heightened tensions following the Hamas attack on southern Israel on October 7, which has sparked renewed debates about arms exports to the region.
Last month, the UK government suspended 30 arms export licenses to Israel due to concerns that they could be used in violation of international law. However, 32 other licenses remain active.
Starmer faced criticism from some members of Parliament, including suspended Labour MP Zarah Sultana, who called for an outright ban on arms sales to Israel, including components for military aircraft.
French President Emmanuel Macron recently echoed calls for a halt on arms exports to Israel, highlighting the urgent need for a political solution to the ongoing conflict. Starmer acknowledged this sentiment, emphasising that the region cannot endure another year of violence and that all parties must exercise restraint.
As the anniversary of the October 7 attack looms, US President Joe Biden also reiterated America's commitment to securing the safe return of hostages held by Hamas. Both leaders' statements reflect a growing international call for renewed dialogue and efforts towards a peaceful resolution to the ongoing crisis in the Middle East.
