UAE leaders have ordered the release of thousands of prisoners to mark the start of Ramadan, with authorities also confirming that financial penalties will be covered to allow those freed to return to their families without outstanding fines.
President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan directed the release of 1,440 inmates this year, an increase of 145 compared to 1,295 pardoned last Ramadan.
In Dubai, Vice-President and Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum approved the pardon of 1,856 prisoners from correctional and punitive institutions.
Sharjah Ruler Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi ordered the release of 407 prisoners on the first day of Ramadan 2026.
In Ajman, Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ajman, directed the release of 134 inmates from facilities under Ajman Police General Command.
Ras Al Khaimah Ruler Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi approved the release of 407 prisoners. Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi instructed authorities to complete the legal procedures required to carry out the decision.
Fujairah Ruler Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi pardoned 125 prisoners. According to state news agency WAM, those released are of various nationalities and were selected based on good conduct.
Across the emirates, officials said the pardons are intended to give inmates an opportunity to begin anew and reunite with their families during the holy month.
