UAE launches Tahweel, first national digital marketplace for recyclables

The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) has officially launched Tahweel, the country’s first fully integrated national digital marketplace for recyclable materials. The announcement was made during a ceremony at BEEAH’s headquarters in Sharjah, held alongside the fourth meeting of the UAE Council for Environmental and Municipal Work.

Developed in partnership with BEEAH, Tahweel is part of the federal government’s key initiatives for 2024–2025. The platform is designed to strengthen circular economy systems, reduce landfill reliance and support the UAE’s long-term vision of sustainable development.

Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, highlighted the broader goals behind the initiative.

She said, “Tahweel reflects our leadership’s vision to transform environmental challenges into promising economic and developmental opportunities".

"We are moving waste management beyond its traditional concept into a new economic domain, one where resources create added value and drive innovative, sustainable business models aligned with our national ambitions and the ‘We the UAE 2031’ vision", added Dr. Amna.

Khaled Al Huraimel, Group CEO and Vice Chairman of BEEAH Group, said, “Tahweel marks a significant leap towards a future-ready circular economy in the UAE".

He added, "We are proud to partner with MOCCAE on this national waste exchange platform. BEEAH’s subsidiary re.life, specialising in trading and recycling solutions, has already achieved rapid growth locally and expanded internationally in recent years".

Eng. Alya Abdelrahim Alharmoodi, Assistant Undersecretary of Sustainable Communities Sector at MOCCAE, said the platform is in line with the government’s efforts to reduce bureaucracy.

“The platform supports businesses in the waste management sector by enabling the Ministry to remove barriers and facilitate direct communication within an integrated and secure network in the sector", said Eng. Alya.

She added that the system “provides a direct and transparent digital channel that brings together producers of recyclable materials and buyers, which reduces time and effort and enhances the efficiency of business operations, which supports the country's business environment and enhances its competitiveness".

How Tahweel Works

Powered by re.life’s technology, Tahweel functions as a virtual marketplace where businesses can trade recyclables such as metals, plastics, paper, wood, e-waste, glass and rubber. The platform offers flexible options, including timed auctions, partial auctions, instant sales and instant purchases, ensuring fair pricing for all participants.

Commercial trading is open to businesses and institutions with a valid trade licence, cutting out intermediaries and streamlining transactions. MOCCAE and BEEAH also plan to coordinate with local waste authorities, run awareness campaigns, and provide training to encourage adoption of the platform.
