UAE: Authorities warn motorists over banned Union Day activities

Abu Dhabi: The Ministry of Interior has outlined how motorists may take part in this year’s 54th Union Day festivities, issuing a reminder that celebrations on the road must not compromise safety. Officials said that traffic patrols will take strict action against vehicles that breach the rules, including issuing fines and ordering impoundment in serious cases.

The ministry confirmed that only two vehicle decorations are formally permitted: Union Day-themed stickers and the UAE flag. Officers noted that anything beyond these two categories has led to repeated safety risks in past years and will not be tolerated during this year’s events.

Traffic police listed a range of activities that will draw penalties. These include forming crowds of cars without approval, creating bottlenecks, reckless driving displays, leaning outside windows or sunroofs, exceeding passenger limits and obstructing visibility by covering windscreens or number plates. The use of loudspeakers, sirens and unauthorized flags also falls under the banned category, along with masks or costumes worn by drivers and high-volume music in non-designated areas.

Authorities said the rules are intended to keep roads manageable as large numbers join the holiday period. Drivers are being urged to follow officers’ instructions, avoid behavior that endangers others and keep celebrations within the approved guidelines.
