The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has expressed grave concern over the escalating humanitarian crisis in Sudan, where severe food insecurity has put more than 25 million citizens at risk. The situation has prompted the UAE to call for urgent international intervention.
In a recent statement, the UAE highlighted the alarming conditions in North Darfur, particularly in the Zamzam camp, which houses over half a million displaced people. The UAE expressed deep concern over the declared famine in parts of the region, as well as the looming threat of famine in the Abu Shouk and Al Salam camps.
Welcoming the United Nations Security Council meeting that focused on the urgent situation in Sudan, the UAE emphasized the necessity of sustained international attention to address the crisis. The UAE affirmed that the humanitarian emergency demands immediate action to secure a ceasefire and expedite the delivery of aid.
Humanitarian aid trucks, currently stalled at Sudan's borders, are desperately needed across the country, particularly in Zamzam Camp and Northern Darfur, where thousands are facing starvation. The UAE has called on the Sudanese Armed Forces to lift restrictions on humanitarian access and urged the Rapid Support Forces to ensure the safety of humanitarian workers, allowing them to operate without the threat of violence.
Condemning the use of starvation as a weapon of war and the denial of aid to civilians, the UAE reiterated that these actions are clear violations of international humanitarian law. The UAE stressed that the dire conditions on the ground necessitate an urgent increase in cross-border and cross-line humanitarian access to save millions of lives.
The UAE urged the international community to ensure that the people of Sudan are not used as political pawns and called on the Security Council to utilize all available tools to address the crisis.
