Riyadh: Saudi Arabia has introduced the world's first heavy transport truck powered by hydrogen fuel and equipped with autonomous driving technology, marking a major step towards sustainable transportation.
The project was launched with support from the Energy, Transport and Logistics ministries and developed through a partnership involving Ismail Abu Dawood Company, Procter & Gamble Limited and Hyvia.
Using hydrogen as its energy source, the truck produces zero carbon emissions, offering a cleaner alternative to conventional heavy-duty vehicles. It can be refuelled within minutes and has an operational range of about 1,500 kilometres, making it suitable for long-distance logistics and heavy cargo transport.
Officials said the vehicle combines environmental sustainability with high efficiency and is designed to meet the growing demands of modern freight operations.
The truck features multi-level autonomous driving technology and a smart architecture powered by advanced software and artificial intelligence. These systems are intended to improve performance, optimise operations and support the development of next-generation transport solutions.
Its reliability and safety are enhanced through extensive digital infrastructure and continuous software updates, enabling efficient operation in demanding logistics environments.
The initiative forms part of Saudi Arabia's broader efforts to modernise the transport and logistics sector while reducing environmental impact. By combining clean hydrogen energy with self-driving capabilities, the truck represents a significant technological milestone for the kingdom.
Authorities view the project as a model for the future of heavy transportation and a demonstration of Saudi Arabia's increasing focus on innovation, sustainability and advanced mobility solutions in line with its long-term development goals.
