Saudi initiative graduates 45 inmates with master’s degrees

The Presidency of State Security, in cooperation with Qassim University, held a graduation ceremony for 45 inmates from the General Investigation Prison in Buraidah, who completed master’s degrees in four academic fields. The program, described as the first of its kind worldwide, followed the same attendance requirements and academic standards applied in Saudi universities.

The event featured emotional scenes as graduates celebrated with their families, reflecting the results of the academic rehabilitation program launched by the Presidency of State Security. The initiative aimed to provide a complete educational environment that allowed inmates to continue higher studies while serving their sentences.

Dr. Fahd Al-Ahmed, Vice President of Qassim University for Educational Affairs, said the partnership with the Presidency of State Security highlights the university’s commitment to education for all. He said the master’s programs in sociology, management and law show that learning can continue regardless of time and place.

Graduate Anas Yousef said, “This is my second graduation with Qassim University, and today I hold a master’s degree with pride for myself and my family”.

His colleague Abdullah Al-Saqr said his GPA exceeded 4.80.

“We are the first group to earn master’s degrees in prison and we hope to continue to doctoral studies", said Al-Saqr.

Families thanked the Saudi leadership for supporting the initiative, calling it a sign of the state’s focus on rehabilitation and education. One parent said the program gives families new hope, while others described their pride as overwhelming.

Education writer Abdulhamid bin Jaber Al-Hamadi said the initiative represents a practical model for rehabilitation, aligning with Saudi Arabia’s broader vision to prepare individuals for productive roles after release.
