Saudi Arabia’s Public Health Authority (Weqaya) said it is monitoring reports of Hantavirus cases linked to a cruise ship in the Atlantic Ocean, noting that the risk to the Kingdom remains low.
The authority said it is working with international health bodies and that current assessments point to a limited threat, citing existing surveillance systems, border controls and public health measures.
Weqaya described Hantavirus as a rare infection that can become severe in some cases. It is mainly transmitted through contact with infected rodents or by inhaling contaminated particles.
Human-to-human transmission is uncommon and has only been recorded in limited cases involving specific strains and prolonged close contact, the authority said.
The advisory comes as part of efforts to inform travellers during the summer travel period.
Weqaya urged travellers to follow official health guidance, maintain hygiene standards, ensure food and water safety and avoid contact with rodents or contaminated areas. It also advised checking health requirements before travel and securing appropriate coverage.
The authority called on the public to rely on official information and avoid sharing unverified reports, adding that updates will be issued if needed.
