Saudi crown prince, Lebanese president discuss regional security

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman held a telephone call with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun to discuss developments in Lebanon and the wider region, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Tuesday.

The two leaders reviewed ongoing efforts to achieve security and stability, with Aoun expressing appreciation for Saudi Arabia’s support and continued assistance to Lebanon under various circumstances.

The crown prince reaffirmed the Kingdom’s backing for Lebanon in maintaining its sovereignty and preserving its resources, territorial integrity and national unity.

The call comes after a 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, mediated by the United States, took effect last Thursday. Despite the truce, Israeli forces remain stationed in a strip of Lebanese territory extending between 5 and 10 kilometers along the border.

Further diplomatic engagement is expected, with new talks between the US ambassadors to Lebanon and Israel scheduled for Thursday in Washington, according to a US State Department official. The meeting follows the first direct talks between the two countries in decades, held on April 14.
