Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman has announced the King Salman Gate project, a mixed-use development to be built next to the Grand Mosque in Makkah.
The project covers a built-up area of 12 million square meters and aims to redevelop Makkah’s central area into a modern, sustainable urban center. It is designed to improve services for visitors and pilgrims, enhance their cultural and spiritual experience and support the Pilgrim Experience Program under Saudi Vision 2030.
Located near the Grand Mosque, King Salman Gate will include residential, cultural and service facilities with capacity for about 900,000 worshippers in its indoor and outdoor prayer areas.
The development will be linked to public transport networks to make access to the Grand Mosque easier. Its design combines Makkah’s traditional architectural style with contemporary planning, maintaining the city’s historical identity while improving comfort and usability. About 19,000 square meters will be allocated to restore heritage and cultural areas.
The project is expected to create more than 300,000 jobs by 2036 and support economic diversification efforts.
Rou’a Al-Haram Al-Makki Company, a subsidiary of the Public Investment Fund, will develop the site. The company focuses on sustainable construction and efficient resource use to raise the quality of life for residents and pilgrims while meeting international standards in real estate and environmental management.
